This study investigates the impact of social media on employee productivity in the pharmaceutical sector in Uganda, with a focus on Cipla Quality Chemical Industries Limited. The research aims to assess the relationship between social media usage and employee productivity, exploring both positive and negative impacts. The specific objectives used in the study include: To examine the impact of social media usage on employee productivity in CiplaQCIL , To explore the relationship between social media usage and employee work ethics in CiplaQCIL , To evaluate the relationship between employee work ethics and employee productivity in CiplaQCIL ; and To determine the mediating role of employee work ethics in the relationship between social media usage and employee productivity in CiplaQCIL. A mixed-methods research design approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. Emphatically, the study methodology employed a Mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative), a survey design using a questionnaire. A sample size drawn using Krejcie & Morgan (1970). sampling formula and subsequently, utilizing data analysis: SPSS version 23 and Smart-PLS version 4 to appropriately analyze the data provided.
The study’s findings highlight the complex nature of social media’s impact on employees’’ productivity, revealing both benefits (e.g., enhanced communication, knowledge sharing) and drawbacks (e.g., distractions, decreased focus). The research contributes to the existing literature on social media usage and employee productivity, offering insights into the role of work ethics as a mediating variable. The study’s results have implications for organizational leaders and human resource practitioners seeking to optimize social media usage and improve employee productivity in the pharmaceutical sector. The research also provides recommendations for policymakers and managers to develop guidelines and strategies that maximize the benefits of social media while minimizing its negative effects. Insights on newer technology and AI forms the basis for further study.
