General Admission Requirements

The general admission requirements for entry to Unicaf University in Malawi programmes are outlined below. Students are encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions to find out more about the range of equivalent international academic qualifications accepted.

Admission Requirements for Bachelor’s Degrees

  • Regular admission to a Bachelor’s degree programme requires the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) with 6 credit passes (grades 1-6) including English,  or international equivalent qualification.
  • Applicants with 4 MSCE credit passes and an accredited, post-secondary certificate may be considered for entry.
  • Applicants with a certified Diploma or Advanced Diploma may be considered for entry.
  • Applicants with a certified Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a relevant subject area may be considered for entry to Year 3 of a relevant Bachelor’s degree.
  • English Proficiency: Grade 6 or better on the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or international equivalent English language qualification.
  • Copy of valid passport or national ID.

In addition to a strong academic record, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills and other relevant background information may be considered.  

Admission Requirements for Master’s Programmes

  • Admission to a Master’s degree programme requires an accredited Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent qualification in an appropriate subject. 
  • Related professional qualifications at the appropriate level may be considered for entry.
  • Students with an accredited Master’s degree may also be considered for entry.
  • English proficiency: Grade 6 or better on the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or international equivalent English language qualification if the Bachelor’s degree was not taught in English.
  • Copy of valid passport or national ID.

In addition, a strong academic record, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills and other relevant background information may be considered.

Admission Requirements for Doctoral Programmes

  • An accredited Master’s degree in a relevant subject area. Students may be considered for doctoral study if their degree is in an unrelated field provided, they have relevant professional experience and can prove their ability to work at doctoral level. A wide range of international qualifications may also be considered. Students are advised to contact the Office of Admissions to find out more about the range of international academic qualifications accepted.
  • Official Master’s degree transcripts
  • Recognised proof of English language proficiency if previous studies were not taught in English. Otherwise, an IELTS score 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in the writing component and no individual component lower than 6.0) is required; or international equivalent English language qualification. 
  • Up to date Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Two official letters of recommendation (one of which must be academic).
  • Research proposal.
  • Evidence of ability to undertake independent research.

All applicants who satisfy the above requirements will be invited to an interview where a final admission decision will be made. For doctoral programmes taught in French, recognised proof of French proficiency will be required.
